If you combine the visual flair of “American Horror Story” with a sadistic haunted house, you’d probably get something close to “Rupture.” A trailer recently dropped for the abduction horror film/psychosexual thriller, which stars Noomi Rapace (“Prometheus,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”). From the looks of the trailer, “Rupture” promises to be one of the scariest movies of the season, despite its post-Halloween premiere.
According to the film’s synopsis, “Young mother Renee (Rapace) has her life thrown into chaos when she is randomly abducted, drugged, and taken to a secret lab facility. As her captors traumatically experiment on her, Renee must discover why she was chosen and fight to escape her prison.” Rapace’s co-stars include Kerry Bishé (“Halt and Catch Fire”), Michael Chiklis (“The Shield”), Lesley Manville (“Mr. Turner”), and Ari Millen (“Orphan Black”).
After Renee’s abduction, a creepy, HAL-esque voice tells her, “People are the virus. And we are the cure. We believe you can become your true and better self.” This voiceover is the only dialogue we’re privy to during the trailer, but we catch a glimpse of what Renee and her fellow prisoners must endure. Hint: it involves a snake.
“Rupture” is directed by Steven Shainberg (“Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus,” “Secretary”). He co-wrote the script with Brian Nelson (“Hard Candy”).
The film premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival and hits theaters in the UK November 4. No word on the U.S. release date yet.
