“Let’s just do our best not to cramp each other’s style,” says Alice (Reese Witherspoon) in a new trailer for Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s “Home Again.” She’s talking to the three young men (Pico Alexander, Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky) who have recently become her roommates. The 40-year old mother of two separated from her husband five months ago, and her mom (Candice Bergen) encourages Alice to think of her new living arrangements as “something that could be sort of exciting.” And it turns out she’s right.
The footage suggests that Alice — and her daughters — get along really well with the trio. So well that things get very, very awkward when Alice’s ex (Michael Sheen) shows up unexpectedly and moves back in. “I miss our family. Let’s fix it,” he begs. But it seems like a new family has formed in his absence. Plus, a romance is developing between Alice and one of the roommates.
“Home Again” marks the feature directorial debut of Meyers-Shyer, daughter of Nancy Meyers. She also penned the script for the romantic comedy.
Witherspoon was last seen in “Big Little Lies,” HBO’s adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s best-selling novel of the same name. The Oscar-winning actress served as an executive producer on the murder mystery.
In a recent interview the “Wild” star revealed that that she faced resistance — and sexism — when she first decided to start working behind-the-scenes. “I really reject the idea that women have to stay in one life,” she explained. “People have said, ‘You can’t start a company; just stay being an actress.’ Why are women supposed to be one thing? Nobody thinks Robert De Niro is stepping outside [his boundaries by] owning hotels and restaurants. Life has many chapters. You have to think, what am I going to do next?”
“Home Again” hits theaters September 8.
