An international trailer has dropped for two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara’s latest film, “The Secret Scripture.” The Ireland-set drama sees Mara and Vanessa Redgrave playing the same character at different times in her life.
“Roseanne McNulty must vacate the soon-to-be demolished mental institution in Roscommon, Ireland that she’s called home for over 50 years,” the film’s official synopsis details. “The psychiatrist, Dr. Grene (Eric Bana), is called in to assess her condition. He finds himself intrigued by Roseanne’s seemingly inscrutable rituals and tics, and her fierce attachment to her Bible, which she has over the decades transformed into a palimpsest of scripture, drawings, and cryptic diary entries.” The intricate document traces Rose’s tragic history, and the events that led up to her institutionalization.
The trailer kicks off with Dr. Grene imploring, “I want to hear your story, Rose.” Her story includes many interested suitors — including a priest. “Do you not understand the power you have over men?” Rose is asked.
But Rose only has eyes for a fighter pilot. “When I met Michael McNulty, I knew I would wait for him forever,” she tells Dr. Grene. Though Rose was warned about who she was “fraternizing” with, her feelings for Michael remained strong. The romance seems to play a major role in Rose’s journey — and why she was admitted into the institution she now resides at.
Based on a 2008 novel of the same name, “The Secret Scripture” is directed by Jim Sheridan (“Brothers”) and made its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. No word on a U.S. release date yet.
Mara’s credits include “Carol,” “Her,” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
