“When have other people’s opinions ever affected anything I’ve done?” asks Rosamund Pike in a new trailer for Marjane Satrapi’s “Radioactive.” The biopic sees the Oscar-nominated “Gone Girl” actress playing Marie Curie, a physicist and chemist who made history as the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields.
Marie is convinced that the scientific community has “fundamentally misunderstood the atom.” She emphasizes, “Science is changing, and the very people who are running science believe the world is flat. I’m going to prove them wrong.”
The spot shows Marie discovering radioactivity — and being written out of her own story on account of her gender. “Our work’s been nominated for the Nobel prize,” her husband and collaborator (Sam Riley) tells her. “And the commendation only mentions my name.”
Marie won’t stand for this “distinct lack of respect” and fights for her accomplishment to be recognized.
“The Informer,” “A Private War,” and “Beirut” are among Pike’s recent credits. Her upcoming slate includes Amazon fantasy epic “The Wheel of Time.”
Satrapi made her directorial debut with “Persepolis,” an adaptation of her acclaimed graphic novel of the same name. Her other features include “The Voices” and “Gang of the Jotas.”
“Radioactive” made its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The film hits Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. July 24.
