Mommie Dearest does her best impression of Marmee in “Run.” Picture-perfect, warm, and loving on the surface, Diane (Sarah Paulson) is a mom whose true nature is gradually revealed in a new trailer for the psychological thriller.
“You do everything for me. You teach me. You cook for me. Am I burden?” Diane’s 17-year-old daughter asks. Chloe (Kiera Allen) uses a wheelchair and has become very reliant on her mom. She’s convinced that she can “do more” for herself, but Diane is quick to end the discussion. “I’m your mom. It’s my job to take care of you when you need me, and you need me,” Diane insists.
When Chloe discovers a shocking secret about her mom’s past, their co-dependent relationship takes a sinister turn. The footage suggests that Chloe, who is desperate to escape her mother’s clutches, may be in danger.
“I believe this will be the first studio movie ever starring a wheelchair user, and just to be part of a historical moment like that is really, really exciting,” Allen told Entertainment Weekly. “But the more exciting thing for me was just the character and the story, and to be able to play a part that was really about the character and not about the disability. And it was written so richly, and with such specificity and detail, which really gave me a lot to play with. But I never felt like he was casting just to be inclusive, I really felt like it was a collaboration.”
“Run” marks the theater actress’ film debut.
Paulson won an Emmy and Golden Globe for playing Marcia Clark in “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” “Glass,” “Bird Box,” and “Ocean’s Eight” are among her recent film credits.
“Run” hits theaters May 8.
