BFFs navigate the murky waters of love and lust in “Girl Picture,” set to premiere at Sundance Film Festival later this month. From Finnish filmmaker Alli Haapasalo, the pic tells the stories of Rönkkö (Eleonoora Kauhanen) and Mimmi (Aamu Milonoff). The pair swap stories about their personal lives while working at a food court smoothie kiosk.
“I’m scared I’ll never feel what others feel,” Rönkkö admits in a new trailer for the film. “I want to be so close to someone that it’s not enough that your skin touches.” Mimmi has found just this kind of connection with Emma (Linnea Leino), a figure skater training for the European championships, but she’s struggling to adjust to being in a relationship. She accuses her girlfriend of using her to “rebel for the first time” in her life.
Haapasalo’s other credits include “Love and Fury” and “Force of Habit.”
Ilona Ahti and Daniela Hakuline penned the script for “Girl Picture.” Following its run at Sundance, which has once again gone virtual due to COVID-19, the film will screen at the Berlinale. Sundance runs from January 20-30, and the Berlinale February 10-20.
