“In our region a Dalit woman journalist was unimaginable. Over the last 14 years, we’ve changed that perception,” we’re told in a new trailer for “Writing with Fire.” Directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, the award-winning documentary tells the story of a newspaper run entirely by semi-literate Dalit women, the lowest caste in Indian society. Their publication focuses on stories missing from the mainstream media in India.
“Writing with Fire” follows the women journalists as their newspaper makes a transition from print to digital. “If we don’t adapt, we won’t survive,” one of the reporters emphasizes. The spot highlights the women’s work out in the field, reporting on the mining mafia and speaking with local police. While some community members are appreciative of the women’s efforts, others are eager to dismiss and devalue their work. “Speak within your limits. Don’t overdo it,” they’re told. They’re also encouraged to focus on housework.
“In our popular culture, we are not used to seeing Dalit women, whose caste is designated as ‘untouchable,’ in positions of power — as leaders, colleagues, risk-takers, and bosses. In taking an intimate, observational approach to our process of filming, I knew I had the opportunity to locate the story in this rare, dynamic space that the world has not experienced so far,” Thomas shared in an interview with us. She added, “To the audience of this film, I hope they are affirmed that another world of possibilities exists, if we only allow ourselves to reimagine.”
“Writing with Fire” won Audience and Special Jury awards at Sundance earlier this year. The film has sold to multiple territories, including the U.K. No word on a U.S. release yet.
