“She was the first — and [she] broke the ice and kicked the door for us gals,” says The Runaways’ Cherie Currie in a new trailer for “Suzi Q.” “People overlooked her. That’s their mistake.” The documentary puts a long overdue spotlight on Suzi Quatro, a pioneering female rock star who has sold millions of albums after breaking out in 1973.
The spot emphasizes that rock music was a male-oriented business. The Go Go’s’ Kathy Valentine recalls how Quatro was the first woman she saw with an instrument in a band.
“Strange how people don’t like you to step out of a box, do they? And I refused to be boxed,” says Quatro, whose hits include “48 Crash,” “Can the Can,” and “Devil Gate Drive.”
On July 1 Utopia Distribution will host a “Suzi Q” virtual event featuring the film and an exclusive Q&A with Quatro and a special guest available for 24 hours only. You can catch the film on VOD and DVD July 3.
