“Orange Is the New Black’s” Taylor Schilling leaves prison behind but not her superiority complex in Laura Steinel’s “Family.” A trailer for the comedy has dropped, and it sees Schilling playing Kate, a self-absorbed workaholic who hates herself but remains convinced that she’s better than everyone else. The senior-level VP at a hedge fund in New Jersey finds herself partying with Juggalos in the trailer.
Kate has risen to the top of her field by focusing all of her energy on her career. She doesn’t bother to befriend her coworkers — or even take the time to learn her niece’s (Bryn Vale) name. Kate is in for a shock when the 12-year-old’s parents need her to babysit while they go out of town. And she’s in for an even bigger shock when the girl runs away, under her supervision, to party with Juggalos.
It’s up to Kate to find her niece, and it looks like she’ll learn plenty of life lessons along the way. But she also has some wisdom of her own to impart. “Nobody is normal,” she tells her niece, who struggles to relate to her peers.
Prison dramedy “Orange Is the New Black” recently wrapped filming on its seventh and final season. No word on when it will drop on Netflix. “The Prodigy,” “Argo,” and “The Lucky One” are among Schilling’s feature credits.
“Family” opens April 19. “SNL’s” Kate McKinnon co-stars.
