“A nice girl doesn’t force their opinions on people. A nice girl smiles and waves and says thank you. I became the person everyone wanted me to be,” explains Taylor Swift in a new trailer for “Miss Americana.” Set to make its world premiere at Sundance January 23, the Netflix doc sees the megastar musician and “Cats” actress embarking on a journey to let go of her fixation with being perceived as a “nice girl” and embrace her true voice — and use it to speak out about her political beliefs.
The trailer shows Swift candidly discussing why she spent a year outside of the public eye, and what went on behind the scenes. “I had to deconstruct an entire belief system, toss it out, and reject it,” the “Lover” singer says. “It woke me up from constantly feeling like I was fighting for people’s respect. It was happiness without anyone else’s input.”
In 2018, after years of intense speculation about her politics — and criticism about her silence on the matter — Swift endorsed Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen in a midterm election in her home state of Tennessee, and criticized his Republican opponent, Marsha Blackburn, for being an enemy of feminism and gay rights.
“I feel really good about not feeling muzzled anymore, and it was my own doing,” the 10-time Grammy winner emphasizes.
You can catch “Miss Americana” in select theaters and on Netflix January 31. Emmy-winning “After Tiller” filmmaker Lana Wilson directed the doc.
