“When I was 16 all I cared about was smashing the patriarchy and burning it all down,” says Amy Poehler in a new trailer for “Moxie.” The “Parks and Recreation” alumna’s latest directorial effort, “Moxie,” tells the story of Vivian (Hadley Robinson, “Utopia”), a shy 16-year-old who takes inspiration from her mother’s (Poehler) rebellious past and a new classmate’s refusal to take shit from the boys at their school.
Vivian and her friends have spent years letting the misogyny at their school go unchecked. The boys’ yearly rating of their female classmate’s “racks” barely raises eyebrows. School administrators and teachers can’t be bothered to address sexism and double standards.
The arrival of a new student (Alycia Pascual-Peña, “Saved by the Bell”) marks a major shift in Vivian’s consciousness. When Vivian recommends that the new girl “ignore” a classmate who is harassing her and to “keep [her] head down” so he’ll “move on and bother somebody else,” she refuses. “I’m going to keep my head up,” she insists. “High.”
Tired of being ignored and underestimated, Vivian decides to follow in her mom’s footsteps and start a feminist zine that exposes her school’s wrongdoings, and it’s not long before she and her friends launch a full-fledged revolution in the halls of their high school.
Poehler made her feature directorial debut with 2019’s “Wine Country.” The former “SNL” star has also directed episodes of her NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation” and Comedy Central stoner comedy “Broad City.”
“Moxie” launches on Netflix March 3.
