Rachel Griffiths’ feature directorial debut hits theaters in Australia September 26. “Ride Like a Girl” is based on real events and sees the Oscar-nominated actress telling the story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to take home the esteemed Melbourne Cup. Teresa Palmer (“A Discovery of Witches”) plays the trailblazer.
Warned that “a girl’s never going to win the Melbourne Cup,” Michelle vows to “be the best.” “You’re out of your mind,” she’s told. “Get married, go traveling, and have kids.” Michelle ignores the unsolicited advice and follows her dreams all the way into history books.
Griffiths received an Oscar nod in 1999 for “Hilary and Jackie.” “Brothers and Sisters” and “Six Feet Under” are among her other acting credits. She previously helmed two shorts and episodes of “Nowhere Boys,” an Australian series.
No word on a U.S. release date for “Ride Like a Girl.” Elise McCredie and Andrew Knight penned the screenplay for the inspirational drama.
