“I can’t be the woman of your dreams while also trying to be my own,” says Tessa Thompson in a new trailer for “Sylvie’s Love.” The period romance sees the “Westworld” actress playing Sylvie, a woman who has always dreamed of a career in television but struggles to reconcile her ambition with her husband’s expectations of his wife.
During an interview to work as a producer’s assistant, the hiring manager warns Sylvie that it’s “not the best job for a housewife.” Sylvie won’t let her marital status get in the way of her aspirations. “I didn’t know that a Negro woman television producer even existed, and all my life that is all I’ve ever wanted to be,” she explains. Unfortunately, her husband (Alano Miller) is far from her biggest cheerleader. “You’re working,” he says in the spot. “You’re not being a very good hostess and what will people say?”
When Sylvie unexpectedly reunites with a man (Nnamdi Asomugha) from her past, she discovers that their lives have changed a great deal in the years they’ve spent apart, but their feelings for each other are as strong as ever.
“Men in Black: International,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Creed II” are among Thompson’s recent credits.
“Sylvie’s Love” debuts on Prime Video December 25.
