“People keep telling me they know me,” Rey (Daisy Ridley) says in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s” final trailer. “No one does.” But that doesn’t seem to be quite true.
To be fair, her foe Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) claims that he understands her are more taunts than anything else. And her friends Finn and Poe (John Boyega and Oscar Isaac) always support her even if they can’t fully comprehend her perspective.
But Luke and Leia do know Rey. They know firsthand what it takes to be a Jedi, and not even death stops the former from guiding his protégée. “Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi — your destiny.” Luke (Mark Hamill) reminds Rey in the spot. “The Force’ll be with you,” he says. “Always,” Leia (Carrie Fisher) adds.
The previous films in this “Star Wars” trilogy, “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi,” were the top-earning films of 2015 and 2017, respectively. They netted a combined $1.6 billion at the domestic box office and $3.3 billion worldwide.
“The Rise of Skywalker” opens December 20. The film marks a major milestone: its second unit director, Victoria Mahoney, is the first black woman to direct on a “Star Wars” pic in the franchise’s 40-plus year history.
