The Wachowski siblings are back with a new film, Jupiter Ascending, that looks much more conventional in form than their last project, the time-shifting Cloud Atlas. Mila Kunis plays Jupiter Jones, the world’s most genetically blessed janitor. But that perfect combination of nucleotides gets Jupiter in trouble, as she shares “the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe” — making her a target of said Queen. It would be way more exciting if Jupiter taught herself how to kick some royal assassin ass with the business end of her mop and a spray bottle of Windex, but alas, Channing Tatum arrives to rescue her.
So, essentially, Jupiter Ascending sounds like a combination of Cinderella and Snow White in space. At least the effects look great. And there’s always hope that there’s a heroine gene lurking somewhere in Jupiter’s DNA.
