Trailer Watch: Tig Notaro’s “One Mississippi” Returns For Second Season

“One Mississippi”

The last time we saw Tig Notaro’s “One Mississippi” alter-ego, she was still oscillating between life crises and a new lease of life “down on the bayou.” The comedian’s semi-autobiographical dark comedy — the first season of which saw Tig make a soul-searching return to her hometown for a painfully hilarious family reunion (of sorts) — is set to return to Amazon Prime on September 8.

Vulture reports that the show’s second season will see Notaro “facing a new batch of misfortunes and cantankerous locals.” We get to meet one of those “cantankerous locals” in the newly released trailer, which sees Tig getting into an argument with a homophobic receptionist who tries to have her thrown out of the local hospital. Also glimpsed making a return to the series is Notaro’s real-life wife Stephanie Allynne in the role of radio-station sound engineer, and potential love interest Kate.

Notaro co-created “One Mississippi” with Diablo Cody (“Young Adult,” “Juno”), and the first season saw a couple of women directors take the helm, with Nicole Holofcener (“Enough Said,” “Please Give”) and Shira Piven (“Welcome to Me,” “Fully Loaded”) directing four out of the six half-hour episodes between them. The show also has a female showrunner in Kate Robin (“Six Feet Under”), and both Robin and Allynne were numbered among the six women writers credited on the first season.

Notaro — who was thrust into the mainstream spotlight after her post-cancer-diagnosis stand-up performance went viral — has spoken to Deadline about her collaboration with Robin and the emotional experience of penning the show. “It’s like a big therapy session, our writer’s room,” the comedian said. “I mean, every day somebody is crying or sharing something they never told anyone.”
