“I’m pretty positive it happened,” says Kaitlyn Dever in a new trailer for “Unbelievable.” The Netflix miniseries is inspired by real events and sees the “Booksmart” actress playing Marie Adler, a teenager who goes to the police to report being raped.
Marie’s neighbors didn’t hear or see anything, no DNA was left behind, her windows and doors were locked, and there were no signs of forced entry. Her assailant brought a blindfold but nothing to tie her with. Unconvinced the crime actually happened, the police doubt Marie and her story, pressuring her to admit that she made it up. “They just kept asking the same question, ‘How come your story doesn’t add up?’ I just wanted to go home,” she explains. As if being raped wasn’t traumatic enough.
Hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen (Toni Collette, “Wanderlust”) and Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever, “Godless”) meet while investigating a similar pair of intruder rapes and team up to see if the crimes are connected.
“What if he knows stations don’t talk to each other?” Karen asks. Grace is quick to answer, “You could have detectives from eight different departments investigating eight identical rapes with no clue they’re all chasing the same guy.” She can’t help but wonder, “Where is the outrage when there’s someone out there preying on the most vulnerable women he can find?”
“Unbelievable” showrunner Susannah Grant (“Confirmation,” “Erin Brockovich”) directed eps of the drama, as did Lisa Cholodenko (“Olive Kitteridge,” “The Kids Are All Right”).
