Trailer Watch: Toni Collette Searches for a Lost Love in Lucky Them

After seeing her in a string of mom roles for the past few years, it’s nice to see Toni Collette out and about again.

In director Megan Griffiths’ Lucky Them, Collette plays a veteran rock journalist on the verge of losing her job. She has one last chance to prove her worth to her magazine: find and write about a former rock star, Matthew Smith, who mysteriously disappeared several years ago — and might be dead. Matthew’s also the ex she never got over, so she has her own reasons for feeling less than enthusiastic about this potential wild goose chase.

Along for the ride is Thomas Haden Church’s software dweeb-turned-aspiring documentarian, who chronicles Collette’s search for Matthew. The best part about this odd pair? He’s much too old for her tastes.

Interestingly, Lucky Them is based on the experiences of magazine writer Emily Wachtel, who co-penned the script.

Here’s Women and Hollywood’s interview with writer Emily Wachtel and director Megan Griffiths from Toronto.

Lucky Them will play at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC this month and will open in select theatres on May 30.
