Trailer Watch: Toni Collette Wants to Try Something New in “Wanderlust”

"Wanderlust"

“Imagine eating at the same restaurant most of your life, and then one day somebody tells you about a different restaurant,” ponders an inquisitive Joy (Toni Collette) as she discusses her marriage. “Your going to this other restaurant doesn’t mean you have to stop going to the restaurant you’ve been going to all your life… It just means now you can do both.”

“Wanderlust,” Netflix and BBC One’s newest original dramedy, follows a fatigued and monotonous couple seeking to revitalize their sex life. Unwilling to separate yet unhappy together, Joy and Alan (Steve Mackintosh) unconventionally turn to polyamory to explore monogamy’s limits and whether they can lead the lives they desire as a couple.

The final three episodes of this Nick Payne-penned series are directed by Lucy Tcherniak, director of “Lay Me Down” and Netflix series “The End of the F***ing World.” Exec producers include “Doctor Foster’s” Roanna Benn and Kate Crowther alongside “Top of the Lake’s” producer Lucy Richer. “Wanderlust” also features British actress Zawe Ashton (“Nocturnal Animals”).

BBC’s Piers Wenger exclaimed that “Toni’s natural warmth, complexity, and wit combine to make her the perfect Joy.” Collette added, “I am honored and thrilled to work with Nick Payne’s wonderful words on ‘Wanderlust.’ It is an authentic and revolutionary story about relationships, sex, love, and all the things we really care about. I could not be more excited.”

Collette most recently starred alongside Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Gabriel Byrne (“In Treatment”) in “Hereditary,” a horror mystery following a woman who may — or may not — be haunted by the ghost of her deceased mother. Her other credits include Showtime’s “United States of Tara,” “Enough Said,” and a supporting role in “The Sixth Sense” that got her an Oscar nod. Her next series, “Unbelievable,” which also features Merritt Wever (“Godless”) and Kaitlyn Dever (“Detroit”), is set to premiere on Netflix sometime next year.

“Wanderlust” debuts on Netflix October 19.
