Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki (“The Night Manager”), and Cynthia Erivo’s (“Mr Selfridge”) characters all lose their husbands in the trailer for “Widows.” The women don’t cross paths in a support group: their hubbies were part of the same criminal organization and died when a job turned bad.
The wives don’t have time to grieve — their late husbands owed a lot of money to crime bosses, and now that they’ve died the women have inherited their debt. The widows are left to clean up the mess their men left behind. “Our husbands aren’t coming back. We’re on our own,” Veronica (Davis) says. So Veronica, Linda (Rodriguez), Alice (Debicki), and Belle (Erivo) decide to take over their husbands’ business and steal the money they need to settle their debt.
“The best thing we have going for us is being who we are,” Veronica tells her fellow widows. “No one thinks we have the balls to pull this off.”
Directed by “12 Years a Slave’s” Steve McQueen, “Widows” co-stars Jacki Weaver (“Silver Linings Playbook”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Liam Neeson, and Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”). McQueen wrote the script with “Gone Girl” author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn.
“Widows” hits theaters November 16.
