Viola Davis is left cleaning up her husband’s mess in a new trailer for “Widows.” Her late love died during a job turned bad, and now it’s up to her to figure out how to pay back the crime bosses he owed money to.
“My husband left me the plans for his next job. All I need is a crew to pull it off,” Veronica (Davis) says in the spot. The crew she assembles is comprised of herself and three other women — Linda (Michelle Rodriguez, “The Fast and the Furious” franchise), Alice (Elizabeth Debicki, “The Night Manager”), and Belle (Cynthia Erivo, “Mr. Selfridge”). The foursome share nothing in common besides the fact that they’re all the widows of men who belonged to the same criminal organization, and they’re all desperate to pay off their husband’s debts. So they join forces to pull off a heist.
“If this whole thing goes wrong, I want my kids to know that I didn’t just sit there and take it. I did something,” Linda announces.
Davis won an Oscar for “Fences” and earned nods for “The Help” and “Doubt.” Her upcoming projects include African female warrior story “The Woman King” and “Small Great Things,” an adaptation of a Jodi Picoult novel about a black nurse in a legal battle with a white supremacist couple.
“Widows” will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and is slated to open the BFI London Film Festival. The Chicago-set caper hits theaters November 16. “Gone Girl” author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn penned the script with the film’s director, Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”).
