“Everything that’s happening — is it real?” asks a young woman convinced she’s the last person left on earth. A trailer has dropped for “Starfish,” and it sees Aubrey (Virginia Gardner, “Runaways”) suffering the loss of her best friend — a cataclysmic event that happens to coincide with the world ending. Aubrey is trapped in the apartment of her recently deceased friend when she finds a cassette labeled: “THIS MIXTAPE WILL SAVE THE WORLD.” “Stay calm,” the voice on the tape warns. “You have to be careful.” She’s being sent on a mysterious mission where she’ll have to follow clues — and outrun monsters — to find answers.
Aubrey confesses that she used to dream about everyone disappearing, but now that the rest of humanity is gone, she can’t help but contemplate all that’s been lost. “Want to know the saddest thing of everybody being gone?” she asks. “The lost stories. People are going to die anyway, but their stories don’t have to.”
“Starfish” begins its theatrical run in NYC on March 13 with additional cities to follow. The pic will be released on VOD May 28.
