“My dad was no good so it made me do some messed up stuff back in the day,” says Mike Epps in a new trailer for “The Upshaws.” Created by “Insecure” scribe Regina Hicks and “Black-ish” actress and stand-up comedian Wanda Sykes, the upcoming Netflix sitcom sees the “Survivor’s Remorse” alumnus playing Bennie, an Indiana-based mechanic who is trying to step up his “daddy game” and make up for his past transgressions.
Bennie’s doing his best to care for “wife Regina (Kim Fields), their two young daughters (Khali Daniya-Renee Spraggins, Journey Christine) and firstborn son (Jermelle Simon), [and] the teenage son (Diamond Lyons) he fathered with another woman (Gabrielle Dennis),” the show’s synopsis details.
Not everyone seems convinced that Bennie is capable of change or impressed with his efforts. His sister-in-law Lucretia (Sykes) announces that she’s going to log into Facebook with her nieces and nephew so she can “show them the kind of life they could have had if their mama had married Dante,” a doctor, instead of Bennie.
Still, Bennie is undeterred. “I’m rolling with you until the wheels fall off,” he tells Regina.
“The Upshaws” debuts on Netflix May 12.
