Horror anthology film “XX” is a breath of fresh air in the male-dominated genre: The feature utilizes an all-female directing team. A new trailer has been released for the project, and the footage is creepy as hell.
Like classic horror anthologies such as “Tales from the Crypt,” or recent entries into the genre, including “The ABC’s of Death,” “The XX” allowed each director to tell any horror story they choose. Each segment of the anthology was not only directed by a woman, but it also stars female leads.
Annie Clark (St. Vincent) makes her directorial debut with “The Birthday Party”; Karyn Kusama (“The Invitation”) directed “Her Only Living Son”; Roxanne Benjamin (“Southbound”) helmed “Don’t Fall”; and director and the once editor of horror culture magazine Rue Morgue Jovanka Vuckovic dares you to open “The Box.” Benjamin also produced. Animator Sofia Carrillo directed the anthology on the whole, and the cast features Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool, and Christina Kirk.
In an episode of KILLER POV podcast Kusama said, “The films are very different, but there are overriding anxieties about female-ness to a degree. And I want to say body horror is a component.”
“XX” will make its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 22 and hits theaters and VOD on February 17. Check out the creepy trailer below.
