A pulse-quickening trailer has been released for “The Monster,” a mother-daughter horror film toplined by Emmy-nominated actress Zoe Kazan. The “Olive Kitteridge” star plays a divorced mother driving her daughter (Ella Ballentine, “Milton’s Secret”) on an emergency last-minute trip to see her father. The route includes deserted country roads. And it’s pouring rain. Cue the goosebumps.
A collision with a dog leaves their car dead. They call for help, but it looks like their problems can’t be solved by a mechanic. The trailer shows the pair stepping out of the car, presumably to check if the dog is fatally injured. The dog is dead, but it turns out they have a lot more to worry about. “Dogs don’t got teeth like this,” the little girl observes, picking up a tooth that looks like it belongs to a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The two have company — according to a press summary, “a terrifying evil is lurking in the surrounding woods, intent on never letting them leave…”
The trailer progresses from spooky to terror-inducing, and includes glimpses of the evil force the mother and daughter are up against — the titular monster.
“The Monster” is directed by Bryan Bertino (“The Strangers”), and is now available on DirecTV. You can catch it in cinemas November 11.
