The Gotham Independent Film Awards will be honoring chef, Emmy-winning TV host, and best-selling author Sandra Lee. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lee will receive the Made in NY Award at the November 26 ceremony. Presented by the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), the prize recognizes achievements and contributions made in New York City’s creative community.
Previous Made in NY recipients include Meryl Streep, Tina Fey, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Audra McDonald, and Alysia Reiner.
Lee won an Emmy for her cooking show, “Semi-Homemade,” which she hosted from 2003 to 2016. She’s also appeared on “Today,” “Good Morning America,” “Home & Family,” and many other talk and interview series. Most recently she exec produced and served as the subject of Cathy Chermol’s short doc, “RX: Early Detection – A Cancer Journey with Sandra Lee.” The film depicts Lee undergoing treatment for breast cancer and chronicles her recovery.
“I feel honored and blessed to be given the Made in NY award at this year’s Gotham ceremony,” Lee said. “New York City inspires me every day and is a gift to us all. I made my documentary short film to help anyone who is, has, or will deal with a cancer diagnosis. My hope is that this recognition will fuel the flame of awareness for those diagnosed as well as their families so they may now have the tools and insights I did not.”
“RX: Early Detection” premiered at Sundance this year and was released on HBO in October. The doc, available on HBO NOW and HBO GO, is also making an Oscar bid.
“We are so pleased to honor Sandra Lee with the Made in NY award this year and to salute both her long career in television and her bravery in documenting her battle with cancer,” stated MOME Commissioner Julie Menin. “Both her activism and her courageous film are saving lives while helping countless families deal with this insidious disease.”
