“Mystery Road” is headed stateside thanks to Acorn TV. The SVOD service has acquired U.S. rights to the Australian drama, Deadline confirms. The Judy Davis-starrer is scheduled to air in August.
The series follows a detective (Aaron Pedersen, “Jack Irish”) and a cop (Davis) investigating the disappearance of two young cattle workers in a remote outback town. Rachel Perkins (“Jasper Jones,” “Redfern Now”) directed all six episodes of the series.
“With its remote landscape, intriguing mystery, and award-winning cast led by Aaron Pedersen and Judy Davis, Mystery Road is right in line with the first-rate international dramas we’re bringing to our subscribers every month,” said Shane Murphy, Managing Director of Acorn Media Enterprises.
Davis’ recent credits include “Feud” and “The Dressmaker.” The Australian actress earned Oscar nods for her roles in “Husbands and Wives” and “A Passage to India.”
“I am a feminist and I understand one day we will reach parity in the film industry,” Perkins said in 2017. “I think that time is rapidly approaching. And I think women in the future need to understand the struggle that people had in order to achieve that parity.” She added, “I don’t find the need to say I’m a filmmaker first and an Aboriginal person second. I’m happy with those labels and I embrace them because I don’t see them as limitations to what I can produce.”
