Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Close, Lena Dunham, Rachel Weisz and Kim Kardashian West will be honored at Variety’s Power of Women: New York, a biannual event celebrating the philanthropic work of women in the entertainment industry. A luncheon will be held on April 24 at Manhattan’s Cipriana Midtown.
“Variety’s Power of Women initiative has become a shining example of what is possible when committed women with a voice stand up for worthy causes and harness their power to give back and inspire others to do the same,” said Michelle Sobrino, Variety’s publisher.
Each of the honorees will receive a donation to their organizations of choice. Goldberg will be recognized for her work with Figure Skating in Harlem, which makes the sport accessible to disadvantaged girls. Close supports Bring Change2Mind, an organization that strives to de-stigmatize mental illness. Dunham works with Girls Educational & Mentoring Services, which helps sexually exploited and/or trafficked girls and women develop their full potential. Weisz is allied with Opportunity Network, an agency that levels the playing field for low-income high school and college students for access to jobs. Kardashian West will be honored for her work for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
