If Wanda Sykes’ recent appearances on “Black-ish” and “The Other Two” left you wanting more, you’re in luck. Netflix has announced that her next stand-up comedy special, “Wanda Sykes: Not Normal,” will hit the streamer May 21. Deadline confirmed the news.
“Not Normal” marks Sykes’ fifth stand-up special, and her first for Netflix. “Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied,” “Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired,” and “I’ma Be Me” are among her previous specials. She received Emmy nods for the latter two, and won an Emmy for writing on “The Chris Rock Show.”
“Every woman in comedy has been told, ‘I’ve already got one woman on the show, so I can’t book another one,'” Sykes has said. “But you can have four guys on, in plaid shirts, on the same show. It was ridiculous. But I think there are more opportunities for women now. Just having the dialogue is good.” She added, “Also, people used to laugh at sexist jokes or racist jokes. Now it’s like, that’s just not funny anymore. It’s like there has been a shifting of the norm of what an audience is into.”
Sykes voices a character in “UglyDolls,” an animated pic about a group of free-spirited misfits that hits theaters May 13.
