Wanda Sykes, Page Hurwitz, and Kim McKoy Developing “W.H.I.P.s” at BET

Sykes in "The Other Two": Comedy Central/Jon Pack

Wanda Sykes recently scored two Emmy nods for her Netflix special, “Not Normal,” and now the comedian is set to add another project to her packed slate. BET has put a half-hour multi-camera comedy from Sykes and Page Hurwitz’s Push It Productions and Werner Entertainment into development. Deadline confirmed the news.

Currently titled “W.H.I.P.s,” the project is described as a “first-of-its-kind African-American female driven comedy that celebrates Women who are Hot, Intelligent, and in their Prime. It follows four former sitcom stars from the ’80s and ’90s who try to navigate the third acts of their lives together under one roof. Through their funny and poignant stories and relationships, the show will examine the notion of family and take on important issues of sisterhood, aging in a youth obsessed culture, finding love and intimacy in the digital age, having a career in the gig economy, and redefining yourself in a world that is rapidly changing,” the source details.

“W.H.I.P.s” is based on an original pitch from Sykes, Hurwitz, and Kim McCoy (“It’s A Mann’s World”).

Alyson Fouse (“Black Jesus”) is signed on to pen the pilot and executive produce.

“Black-ish” and “The Other Two” are among Sykes’ recent acting credits. Her upcoming projects include Nicol Paone’s Thanksgiving-themed comedy “Friendsgiving,” and “Breaking News in Yuba County,” a comedy about a woman whose life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers her husband in bed with another woman.
