“I’ve never seen anything like her,” says Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in a special look at “Captain Marvel.” This is coming from a guy who has spent considerable time with the likes of Black Widow, Thor, and Iron Man. But Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) — also known as Carol Danvers — is something else altogether.
The spot sees Carol telling Nick about two alien races at war. Skrulls are shapeshifters infiltrating planet Earth, or as Carol describes them in a previous trailer, “the bad guys.” In order to prove she’s not one of them, Carol shows off her photon blast. Only Krees can do that. Carol is Kree. She forgets a lot, but she remembers that.
“I have this power but I don’t know where it came from,” Carol admits. She’s being encouraged to “let go of the past,” but she can’t remember her past. Set in the ’90s, “Captain Marvel” sees Carol landing on Earth from the sky and trying to figure out what happened beforehand.
Larson won an Oscar in 2016 for “Room.” Her recent credits include “The Glass Castle” and “Kong: Skull Island.” The “Short Term 12” actress made her feature directorial debut with “Unicorn Store,” a coming-of-age comedy about an art student who is obsessed with unicorns. The pic premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
“Captain Marvel” marks the first female-led film in the Marvel franchise, and the first to be helmed by a woman. Anna Boden co-directed the pic with Ryan Fleck. “Mississippi Grind” and “Half Nelson” are among the collaborators’ previous credits.
You can catch “Captain Marvel” in theaters beginning March 8. Boden, Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and Jac Schaeffer penned the script.
