Cue the “Little Boxes.” Mary-Louise Parker has signed on to star and executive produce a “Weeds” sequel series that’s in the works at Starz. The project is written and exec produced by Victoria Morrow, who served as co-EP on the series’ original Showtime run, and produced by Lionsgate Television. Variety broke the news.
The revival will catch up with Nancy (Parker) and the rest of the Botwins in the age of weed legalization, 10 years after the original show’s events. For now at least, the new project is being called “Weeds 4.20.” That’s how Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer referred to it on an earnings call yesterday, per the source.
Jenji Kohan, who created “Weeds,” is not attached to “4.20.”
The dark comedy originally aired for eight seasons, from 2005-2012. The Lionsgate TV title followed the misadventures of Nancy Botwin, a newly-widowed woman who begins selling weed to maintain her upper-middle-class, suburban lifestyle. Parker netted a Golden Globe and three Emmy nominations for her performance. Elizabeth Perkins, who would later appear in the Kohan-exec-produced “GLOW,” also received three Emmy nods for her supporting character, Nancy’s frenemy Celia Hodes. Overall, “Weeds” scored 20 Emmy nominations during its run.
“As excited as we are about our new series, I want to remind everyone that ‘the old is also new,’” Feltheimer announced. “We’re thrilled to be back in business with series star and producer Mary-Louise Parker on what we’re calling ‘Weeds 4.20,’ already in active development at Starz, as we prepare a comprehensive and integrated rollout for one of television’s most beloved properties.”
“Red Sparrow,” “Billions,” and “When We Rise” are among Parker’s more recent screen credits. In 2015, she published a memoir, “Dear Mr. You.” She’s currently toplining Broadway’s “The Sound Inside” and will star in the Broadway revival of Paula Vogel’s “How I Learned to Drive” next spring.
Since “Weeds,” Morrow has written for and co-exec-produced “Rectify” and “Chance.” She’s also penned episodes of “Deadwood” and “Big Love.” Next, she’ll serve as writer and co-EP on Apple TV+’s upcoming sci-fi series “Foundation.”
