What if awards ballots featured all women candidates in every category, instead of the usual one or zero? What if women directors, writers, DPs, editors, and other crew members were the subject of awards buzz as often as their male counterparts? These are the questions Women and Hollywood, Women In Film Los Angeles, and New York Women in Film & Television are addressing with their new awards season campaign, #VoteForWomen. The three orgs have teamed up to make sure women are not forgotten in the lead-up to the 2020 Oscar nominations.
#VoteForWomen includes a detailed ballot of the actresses, women filmmakers, and women crew deserving of awards attention. Lorene Scafaria (“Hustlers”), Marielle Heller (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”), and Melina Matsoukas (“Queen & Slim”) are among those the campaign spotlights. Overall, the campaign aims to remind the industry that there are plenty of women making great movies, ergo plenty of women who should be part of the Oscars conversation.
