Variety has announced the scribes selected for its 10 Screenwriters to Watch of 2017 and six of the writers are women. They include Liz Hannah (“The Post”), Maggie Betts (“Novitiate”), and Tracy Oliver (“Girls Trip”). All of the writers will be honored at Variety’s event at the upcoming Whistler Film Festival.

Set to open in limited release on December 22, “The Post” centers on The Washington Post’s decision to publish the Pentagon Papers. Both “Novitiate” and “Girls Trip” opened earlier this year. The former is about a secular-raised young woman who decides to become a nun and the latter sees four friends reunite for the Essence Festival in New Orleans. “

Variety’s Screenwriters to Watch will discuss their careers and experiences in show business at a conversation at the fest on December 2. They will also receive awards at the fest’s Award Celebration on December 3.

“The Whistler Film Festival is delighted to collaborate once again with respected entertainment industry authority, Variety, to present Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch class of 2017,” commented Whistler Film Fest’s executive director Shauna Hardy Mishaw. “With Variety showcasing the brightest and most promising writers of the year, the chance to meet and hear their stories first-hand makes this a must-attend discussion for both casual fans and aspiring filmmakers.”

The Whistler Film Festival will be held November 29 to December 3 in Whistler, British Columbia. The fest is also home to WIDC’s Story & Leadership Program, which will feature eight female directors such as Sonia Bonspille Boileau and Katia Café Fébrissy.
