Women-directed films once again dominate the Competition sections of the South by Southwest Conference and Festival. Just like last year, titles helmed and co-helmed by women account for 60 percent of the the features screening in 2019’s Competition categories.
Of 10 films in the Narrative Feature Competition, five are women-directed. Offerings include Emily Ting’s “Go Back to China,” the story of a rich girl who blows her trust fund and is forced to return to China to work for the family toy business, and Karen Maine’s “Yes, God, Yes,” a comedy about a 15-year-old Catholic girl who discovers the joys of masturbation but fears she risks eternal damnation from indulging in her new pastime.
Seven of 10 features in the Documentary Feature Competition are helmed or co-helmed by women, with titles such as “We Are the Radical Monarchs,” Linda Goldstein Knowlton’s portrait of a group of young girls of color in Oakland who earn badges for activities that support social justice, and “For Sama,” Waad al-Khateab and Edward Watts’ chronicle of al-Khateab’s triumphs and tragedies across five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria.
The Headliners slate, a collection of six films boasting “big names” and “big talent,” is dramatically less female-friendly. “Booksmart,” Olivia Wilde’s feature directorial debut, is the sole woman-directed title set to screen. Her comedy tells the story of BFFs about to graduate high school who realize they haven’t channeled enough energy into having fun — and vow to do just that during an epic party night.
Just three of 14 features in the Narrative Spotlight are women-directed or co-directed. This program includes Lynn Shelton’s latest, “Sword of Trust,” depicting the hijinks of a pawnshop owner and his sidekick, who join forces with a couple to cash in on a family heirloom.
The Documentary Spotlight lineup includes 16 films, four of which are helmed or co-helmed by women. Among the titles set to screen are “Building the American Dream,” Chelsea Hernandez’s look inside three immigrant families’ fight for justice and equality within the construction industry, and “Qualified,” Jenna Ricker’s portrait of the first woman to attempt to race in the Indianapolis 500.
A celebration of filmmakers who are “audacious, risk-taking artists,” the Visions lineup features 10 films overall, and six directed by women. They include “Jezebel,” Numa Perrier’s story of a 19-year-old who is introduced to the world of fetish cam girls, and “Romantic Comedy,” Elizabeth Sankey’s exploration of rom-coms.
Only one of the 17 films selected for the 24 Beats Per Second section, a showcase of “the sounds, culture, and influence of music and musicians,” is from a female filmmaker. Julia Parnell directed “The Chills: The Triumph and Tragedy of Martin Phillipps,” about the eponymous New Zealand “music genius,” with Rob Curry.
All eight of the Global pics are directed by women. Among the projects are Barbara Vekarić’s “Aleksi,” which sees a 20-something woman moving back in with her domineering family, and Marlén Viñayo’s “Cachada: The Opportunity,” following five Salvadoran saleswomen as they stage their life stories.
