Women in Entertainment (WIE) announced that its annual summit will take place at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center on October 11.
Per its press release, WIE, founded by Gretchen McCourt and Renee Rossi, works to “address a range of pivotal and timely issues that affect women.” Topics of this year’s summit will include “the rise of women’s leadership, addressing our evolving world in the wake of the Me Too movement, how storytelling can impact social change, and empowering the next generation of extraordinary women creatives.”
DreamWorks Animation Television will present a panel entitled “She-Ra: Evolution of a Warrior Princess,” which will discuss Netflix’s upcoming reimagining of She-Ra, a 1980s animated warrior heroine who fights against evil. Panel speakers include exec producer Noelle Stevenson, co-director Kiki Monrique, art director Liz Kresin, and story editor Josie Campbell.
“Jessica Jones” producer Raelle Tucker, Julie McNamara of CBS, and Michelle Kantor of Cinefemme and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” are among this year’s numerous speakers. Geena Davis will also discuss her work with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
A screening and panel on Lisa D’Apolito’s feature directorial debut, “Love, Gilda,” will close out the event. D’Apolito’s documentary chronicles the life and enduring impact of Gilda Radner, “SNL’s” first female performer. The film intertwines diary entries, recordings, and interviews with those who knew and looked up to Radner. “Love, Gilda” is currently playing in limited release via Magnolia Pictures.
“Our goal for the summit is to continually open conversations and in turn, open more doors for women in the entertainment world,” said Rossi. “The women featured this year are dynamic visionaries and we are thrilled to have them share their knowledge with our audience.”
