“Unraveling Athena: The Champions of Women’s Tennis,” a documentary exploring the lives, careers, and struggles of some of history’s finest female tennis players, has been acquired by Shout! Studios. Deadline reports the company has secured North American rights for the film, and is “eyeing a multi-platform bow later this year.”
Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Evonne Goolagong, Pam Shriver, Martina Hingis, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Monica Seles, Kim Clijsters, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic, Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, Victoria Azarenka, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Sania Mirza, Dinara Safina, and Tracy Austin all appear in “Unraveling Athena.” The film, from director Francis Amat, “reveals their perseverance, trials, and, tribulations and achievements, offering insight into the mind of the pro athlete and what it takes to make a champion.”
Two of modern history’s most iconic tennis pros, sisters Serena and Venus Williams, are not among the film’s interviewees, but according to IMDb, they are featured in the doc via archival footage.
Zatopeka Films’ Paloma Gongora is among the project’s producers. Kaleidoscope Film Distribution Limited also produced.
“’Unraveling Athena’ delivers a long overdue and immensely entertaining celebration of the women who earned their rightful place in the pantheon of tennis champions,” Jordan Fields, Shout! Studios’ VP Acquisitions said. “What it means to strive, to endure, to move past disappointment, and fight another day — these are the lessons of sport but also of life, so this uplifting film is widely relatable.”
Several other women-driven sports films have been announced in the past few weeks, including Francesca Gregorini’s pic about tennis champs Althea Gibson and Angela Buxton, “The Match”; Alexis Ostrander’s Red Rose Crew rowers movie; and Netflix’s feature about the 1999 U.S. Women’s Soccer team.
