Women of Color Directing All of “Boomerang” Season 2, New Trailer Drops

"Boomerang"

Dime Davis, Tiffany Johnson , and Katrelle N. Kindred are joining “Boomerang.” The trio — all of whom are women of color — are directing the entirety of the BET comedy’s second season, Deadline confirms. Davis (“A Black Lady Sketch Show”) is directing four of the season’s eight episodes, while Johnson (“Dear White People”) and Kindred (“The Labyrinth”) will helm two each. The latter “was brought on by Davis” and is making her TV directorial debut.

Davis, who directed several episodes of Season 1 and served as co-exec producer, has also been tapped to showrun Season 2 alongside Angeli Millan (“The Muppets”).

BET, its parent company Viacom, and “Boomerang” producers Hillman Grad Productions, 606 Films, and Paramount Television all supported the creative decision to solely hire women of color directors this season, the source reveals.

“We really wanted to go bigger and bolder,” Davis said. “Keeping everything we loved from the first season and dumping the rest, we were able to find a unique approach to the storytelling in season 2. We were given the freedom to make ‘Boomerang’ our own, and Angeli and I ran with that.” She continued, “We’ve truly made this season of ‘Boom’ an ensemble show, delivering dynamic character arcs that ask a lot of our cast — and it’s all been worth it — the performances, this season, are truly magical … as is the show.”

“Boomerang” isn’t the first series that has exclusively brought on women directors. Other examples include “Queen Sugar,”Harlots” and Season 2 of “Vida.”

Inspired by the classic ’90s rom-com of the same name, BET’s “Boomerang” picks up 25 years after the events of the film and focuses on the relationship between Simone Graham (Tetona Jackson), whose parents were portrayed by Halle Berry and Eddie Murphy in the movie, and Bryson (Tequan Richmond), the son of Robin Givens’ character. The couple are trying to make a name for themselves, apart from their parents’ legacies, while facing their own romantic travails. Lala Milan, Brittany Inge, Leland B. Martin, and RJ Walker round out the cast as Simone and Bryson’s friends.

A new trailer for “Boomerang’s” second season sees fractures forming among the group. Simone and Bryson are having problems and their friends are stuck in the middle. The clip, available below, also hints that the show will be exploring spirituality this season.

Lena Waithe created “Boomerang” with Ben Cory Jones, and exec produces via her Hillman Grad banner. Berry also exec produces through her 606 Films.

“Boomerang” returns March 11.
