“Wynonna Earp’s” third season just debuted, but the Syfy fantasy series has already received an order for its fourth installment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the renewal was officially announced at the cult fave’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend. The 10-episode fourth season of “Wynonna Earp” will air in 2019.
“We are absolutely delighted that ‘Wynonna Earp’ has been renewed for a fourth season,” said creator and showrunner Emily Andras. “We are so grateful to Syfy for their relentless and ferocious support of the series and the ‘Earper’ fandom.”
Based on the IDW comic by Beau Smith, “Wynonna Earp” is the story of Western icon Wyatt Earp’s great great-granddaughter (Melanie Scrofano). She takes on demons, the reincarnated outlaws her great great-grandpa faced, and other supernatural foes with the help of her “Peacemaker.” The show co-stars Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Katherine Barrell, Tim Rozon, Shamier Anderson, and Michael Eklund.
While the show is not a ratings hit, it has garnered a passionate fandom and social media presence. It’s also drawn comparisons to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” another fantasy series centered on a kick-ass heroine. “Wynonna Earp” has been commended for its depiction of queer female characters — namely Provost-Chalkley’s Waverly Earp and Barrell’s sheriff’s deputy Nicole Haught — and its refusal to play into the Bury Your Gays trope. (Bury Your Gays refers to television’s habit of killing off its gay characters, essentially portraying them as tragic figures instead of actual people.)
“Wynonna Earp’s” third season premiered July 20. New episodes air Fridays on Syfy.
