Like most of us, Syfy is a big fan of “Wynonna Earp” showrunner Emily Andras — so much so that the network wants to ensure a relationship past the series. Per THR, Syfy and Andras are teaming up for Andras’ next creative endeavor, a meta drama entitled “Axeholes.”
“Axeholes” sees a group of comic convention attendees who are literally transported into their favorite fantasy TV series. In order to survive the world of “Blue Bar’Bara,” they must work together to navigate “profanity-spewing battle axes, sociopathic fairies, disturbingly sensual dragons, and a chainmail-bikini-wearing shield maiden.” Syfy is currently looking for another studio to co-produce before declaring an official green light. Andras will showrun and exec produce.
“I am excited to take on a new adventure series that is an adoring, tongue-in-cheek love letter to fandom in general, and fierce barbarian princesses in particular,” Andras said. “I am especially thrilled that it will allow me to continue working with Syfy, who have been endlessly supportive of the hilarious, moving, action-packed feminist genre shows I love to create for television.”
Josh Van Houdt, Syfy’s vp of original co-productions, ensured that the enthusiasm is mutual. “Emily Andras leads with a distinct voice and tremendous vision. Syfy is committed to Emily’s brand of creative storytelling, and we are thrilled to continue our partnership with this project.”
“Wynonna Earp,” based on the IDW comic by Beau Smith, sees Western icon Wyatt Earp’s great-great-granddaughter (Melanie Scrofano) battle reincarnated outlaw demons and other supernatural forces with her “Peacemaker” revolver.
Its anticipated fourth season has already had quite the ride. Though Syfy renewed the show shortly after Season 3 ended, financial setbacks put production indefinitely on hold. #FightforWynonna was thus born and determined fans went so far as to purchase a series of billboards in Times Square. Thanks to their efforts, pre-production will begin this fall with filming to start in January 2020.
