Yael Hedaya and Daphna Levin’s Series About Turning “Fifty” Ordered by Israel’s Yes

"Fifty": Endemol Israel

Israeli writers Yael Hedaya and Daphna Levin have teamed up with Israeli broadcaster Yes for an eight-part series on turning 50. Hedaya will act as creator and writer while Levin is set to direct.

Deadline reports that the new series will follow a 49-year-old widowed screenwriter and mother of three (Ilanit Ben-Yaakov) who has set two goals for her 49th year: to develop a comedy series about a 50-year-old woman, and to have sex. By the finale, viewers will see her “achieve one of these.”

Hedaya’s previous series “B’Tipul” (“In Treatment”) garnered both domestic and international success and was purchased by multiple companies, including HBO. “Fifty” is loosely based on her own experience. “’Fifty’ is inspired and fueled by the charged particles of my life as a writer and a single mother by choice, of three children,” she said. “When I turned 50 I decided to let nature do the job, so that I can sit back and enjoy being an aging dysfunctional parent.”

Levin, who also worked on “B’Tipul,” co-created “Euphoria” alongside Ron Leshem. HBO’s American adaptation of the same name premiered this spring.

Endemol Shine Israel’s CEO, Amir Ganor, emphasized “Fifty’s” potential success. “Yael Hedaya encapsulates the internal conflicts of a time that often feels like the bad remake of adolescence, only this time there’s no one to rebel against,” he said. “This darkly funny series will resonate with audiences anywhere and with such excellent Israeli talent both on and off screen, we are confident it will be a sure-fire hit.”
