The European Film Academy has announced the nominees for its People’s Choice Award, the winners of which will be feted at the EFA ceremony on 7th December in Berlin.
Academy Award winning director Susanne Bier is the lone female director on the list, nominated for her multi-lingual rom-com Love is All You Need, starring Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm as hapless middle-aged parents who meet by coincidence en route to their children’s wedding – his son is marrying her daughter. A heady mix of family drama and hilarity ensues. The film struck a chord with European audiences but faces stiff competition from previous winner Pedro Almodovar’s I’m So Excited (he won for Volver) among the other titles.
Bier is not unfamiliar with the EFAs – she has previously scooped EFA nominations and awards for her films In A Better World, After the Wedding and Brothers. She has recently completed Serena, the hotly anticipated adaptation of Ron Bash’s book about the childless wife of a timber baron in Depression-era North Carolina. Bier and Jennifer Lawrence replaced once-attached talent Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie, while Bradley Cooper and Toby Jones round out a stellar cast.
