“The Piano” is about to turn 25, and we’re celebrating its birthday in London. Women and Hollywood and Birds Eye View will host a screening of Jane Campion’s masterpiece on May 18 at Curzon Mayfair.
This is a preview of the new Digital Restoration of the Oscar-winning film, which will be released June 15.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Women and Hollywood Founder and Publisher Melissa Silverstein, Birds Eye View’s Director-at-Large Mia Bays, critic and writer Kate Muir, and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Tina Gharavi.
Set in the Victorian era, “The Piano” stars Holly Hunter as a mute Scotswoman sent to New Zealand for an arranged marriage with a wealthy landowner (Sam Neill). The talented pianist arrives with her daughter and prized piano. She takes an immediate dislike to the man she’s meant to marry after he refuses to carry the piano home with them and instead sells it to his overseer (Harvey Keitel).
Hunter and Paquin both won Oscars for their performances in the drama, and Campion won for her script. She also became the second woman ever nominated for Best Director (Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, and Greta Gerwig have since followed in hers and Lina Wertmüller’s footsteps).
