Theresa Rebeck has a new show in the works. The “Smash” creator is taking on the world of gaming — and tackling its infamous misogyny. Deadline reports that YouTube has given a pilot order to “It’s A Man’s World,” a half-hour comedy that will explore gender inequality in the gaming industry.
Penned by Rebeck, the project follows Emma, “a successful video game design executive and the sole breadwinner for her family who is used to dodging the land mines that come with being a woman in a male-dominated field.” When Emma gets fired and discovers that she’s being blacklisted, she decides to disguise herself as a man to get a new job.
Christina Wayne’s Assembly Entertainment is producing in association with ITV Studios America.
Production is slated to kick off in the fall.
“I’ve spent my whole career working in situations where women were being actively discriminated against, period,” Rebeck has said. “A lot of time gets wasted, and the best work does not get done. The only thing that comes out of it is that a lot of mediocre men cling to their power, and a lot of excellent women get kicked to the curb. It undermines our art, our productivity, our profit margins, our idealism, and our lives.”
A two-time Emmy nominee, Rebeck’s TV credits include “LA Law,” “NYPD Blue,” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” She created NBC musical drama “Smash,” which ran from 2012-13. Her play Bernhardt/Hamlet starring Janet McTeer is now playing on Broadway and her film “Trouble,” a which she she wrote and directed opens October 5. The Anjelica Huston-starrer tells the story of siblings feuding over their late father’s land.
