“The Cloud in Her Room” has been named as the 2020 winner of International Film Festival Rotterdam’s (IFFR) Tiger Award. Founded in 1995 with the aim of “discovering, raising the profile of, and rewarding up-and-coming international film talent,” the honor includes a €40,000 cash (about $44,250 USD) prize.
“We are incredibly impressed with the quality of this year’s Tiger Competition, which in many cases generated a significant festival buzz,” said IFFR Director Bero Beyer, as per Cineuropa. “We thank all the filmmakers for their ambitious and creative approaches to cinema. Remember these names because we’re sure to see much more from them in the future.”
Written and directed by Zheng Lu Xinyuan, “The Cloud in Her Room” sees the Chinese filmmaker telling a “personal story about the fast pace of change in her country,” the source details. The drama, which marks her feature directorial debut, centers on a woman who returns to her hometown for Chinese New Year.
The jury praised the black and white film’s portrayal of “a certain global generation paralyzed by modern alienation and capitalism.”
