Zoe Saldana and “Good Trouble” writer Claudia Forestieri are working on a family comedy for HBO Max. They’re collaborating on “The Gordita Chronicles,” a coming-of-age story partially based on Forestieri’s childhood that’s now in development at the upcoming streamer. Deadline broke the news.
“The Gordita Chronicles” sees “a Latina reporter looking back on her childhood as a chubby, willful, and reluctant Dominican immigrant growing up with her eccentric family in 1980s Miami,” the source summarizes. Forestieri penned the project and serves as co-executive producer. Saldana will exec produce for Cinestar Pictures alongside her sisters, Mariel Saldana and Cisely Saldana. Josh Berman (“Drop Dead Diva”) is also exec producing via his Osprey Productions.
Forestieri is currently writing for “Selena,” Netflix’s forthcoming drama series about the late Tejano music star. She wrote and directed the short “The Boyfriend Cemetery” and worked as a producer for Telemundo’s Los Angeles affiliate. She received five local Emmys and a GLAAD Media award for her coverage of the Latino community in the latter post. Forestieri is an alumna of HBO’s Access Writing Fellowship, NALIP’s Latino Writers Lab, and NBC’s Writers on the Verge program.
Saldana has several projects on her slate, such as Jasmine McClade’s sports pic “Fencer,” Reed Morano’s fact-based CIA thriller “Sabaya,” and Netflix series “From Scratch,” based on Tembi Locke’s memoir and exec produced by Reese Witherspoon. Her more recent credits include “Avengers: Endgame” and “Missing Link.” NBC’s remake of “Rosemary’s Baby” and friendship drama “The Honor List” are among her previous producing gigs.
