“You Must Remember This” creator Karina Longworth is digging up more Hollywood history. The podcast host is launching a narrative podcast exploring actress Joan Bennett and producer Walter Wanger’s ill-fated marriage and its fallout.
Deadline reports that “New Girl’s” Zooey Deschanel and “Mad Men’s” Jon Hamm will play the leads in “Love is a Crime.” Longworth and Vanessa Hope will co-host the podcast. Hope, the director of 2015 doc “All Eyes and Ears,” is the granddaughter of Bennett and Wanger.
The project hails from Longworth, Hope, and Vanity Fair, and will “tell the story of how, in 1951, Wanger, who produced films including 1963’s ‘Cleopatra,’ shot agent Jennings Lang, whom he suspected was having an affair with Bennett, but it was Bennett who paid a public price for her husband’s offense.”
“Love is a Crime” is slated to premiere August 17.
“Why would my grandfather, a successful movie producer, a liberal thinker, a man who helped Jewish emigres escape Hitler, take a gun to confront his wife?” Hope said. “Why would my grandmother, a beautiful movie star who had all but invented the archetype of the film noir femme fatale, and was then starring in a hit franchise of family films, risk everything to sneak around with her agent?”
Bennett received an Emmy nod for her role in “Dark Shadows.” Her other acting credits included “Man Hunt,” “The Woman in the Window,” and “Scarlet.”
