Melissa,
Sorry for the late response. I spent the weekend studying.

While I don't remember the title of it, Drew Barrymore is directing a movie about women's roller derby teams that is going to star Ellen Page. Ellen Page is also supposed to star a new adaptation of Jane Eyre.

And since my tastes run towards the geekier end of things, you might want to be on the lookout for any developing news about the adaptation of the graphic novel/comic book series Y: The Last Man, about a plague that wipes out the entire male population except for one young man and his pet monkey. So of course, there's actually a lot of good roles for women, especially for women of color if it sticks closely to the books. DJ Caruso is supposed to direct, and Shia LaBeouf is supposed to star as Yorick. Maybe there will be more news about it if Eagle Eye does okay.

At this rate, I'd just be happy for any mainstream movies about women or prominently feature women that aren't about babies or weddings.

Sarah-

Thanks so much for your comment on SATC. you are 100% right. As I was reading your comment I was thinking, geez, I've written a lot about this film lately.

I guess that's one of the points I'm trying to make. There are so few films about women so we (or me) get stuck writing about the few that are coming out.

Please keep reading. I am always trying to write different kinds of topics. If you have any suggestions, send them my way.

Melissa
Women & Hollywood

I don't like the term "chick flicks" either.

I have seen some episodes of SATC here and there, but the show has frankly never appealed to me (I find it amusing at best but I don't understand why it was nominated for all those comedy awards), and I don't plan on seeing the movie. Some of the fans of the show scare me. I've had friends who are fans who when I/we were single, try to make me feel guilty for not behaving like a SATC character, and for not wanting to get married.

I've kind of backed off from reading this blog until the SATC movie has come out and the hype has died down. I think you kind of fail to realize that just because you find a feminist message in it, or some of the stars may find a feminist message in it, that all fans of the show find a feminist message.

Feminism doesn't sell because men have convinced women that it is a bad thing to be associated with. How? With all of their films written & directed from the MALE point of view. Women are subliminally re-encoded every time they get sucked into one of these mundane "chick flick" etc movies.

Sorry!! Your post touched of a few nerves.

I hate "chick flicks" - it is condescending. Do we have a term for "stud flicks?"

As for Sex in the City - I confess I have shied away from watching it out of fear. I shouldn't judge something I have not seen - very, very true - but the way that series has been packaged/marketed makes my feminist flesh crawl. It is all about how those women LOOK.

So ok - maybe it is now time to watch the series before saying anything else . . .
