Celebrating 15 Years of Women and Hollywood

This fall marks the 15th anniversary of Women and Hollywood. When I started Women and Hollywood in 2007, a woman had never won an Oscar for best director; a woman of color had never directed a $100 million movie; women leads in big budget movies were negligible; no one was supposed to talk about the sexual abuse rife across the industry; and Hollywood’s #MeToo reckoning was a decade away.

Fifteen years later, things are very different. The false assumptions that fueled the industry — how women can’t be trusted to direct big budget movies, women’s movies don’t make money, young boys drive the box office — have been consigned to the dustbin of history.

And the work of Women and Hollywood has been a part of that change.

We all know that there is still so much work to do, particularly when it comes to ensuring that women of color are represented on-screen and behind the scenes, but I also want to celebrate the progress that has been made.

I am launching a campaign to mark this anniversary and to raise some funds for the ongoing work of Women and Hollywood. We don’t have big corporate sponsors, and for years have been supported by a generous donation from a foundation. There is still more work to do. Not only will we keep amplifying women’s voices, but we will work to expand the Girls Club (our global community for female creatives to connect and support each other) and also will launch the Creative Doula Program, a radical new approach to helping advance women in filmmaking, creating and inspiring a new generation of Hollywood storytellers.

As a member of the Women and Hollywood community, we would appreciate any contribution you can make to Women and Hollywood here. (If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution of $1,000 or above, please email me at melissa@womenandhollywood.com and I will share the link.)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for being a part of our work.

Onward.
