Interesting article and topic. As a biracial screenwriter I just want to tell great stories that get produced. I don't limit myself to creating stories for a certain type of people but I do want to to help create opportunities for minority directors and actors to showcase their talent. I hope things change but even if they don't I won't let that stop me.

Beyonce is a pop star. That doesn't mean folks will see her in a movie. If that were the case, Fighting Temptations would have opened.

All Hollywood cares about is green. So until "black films" make more money they will be a niche market.

Regarding the lack of black talent behind the scenes don't get me started. I've been in the biz for over a decade and I think it's getting worse. I worked on Love & Basketball and I remember a bunch of films that came after ours that made money. Then boom nothing. Now we have either a few period dramas or Tyler Perry.

Many in the biz think Secret did well because it was based on an extremely popular book and they marketed the heck out of Dakota Fanning.

I try not to get discouraged but it's hard.

Write your own stories, produce them, and release them.

Stop complaining. Major Hollywood studios will never give us that much credit. Indie filmmaking is where it's at.

The best thing for anyone who thinks their work needs better distribution is to set up distribution companies, do the work & see if their feeling is correct. Waiting for just a few large companies (Hollywood) to make money from your movies by selling the movies to a lot of people is not, and probably never was, necessary.

Also, I think any competent director should be able to direct any kind of script that he/she wants - even if that script features characters that do not look like the director, or have a different gender or sexual orientation than the director. I've seen good movies made by directors who were not of the same background as the characters. Just takes a lot of research, good advise & advisors & good directing/filmmaking skills - I think.
